The bs passenger carriage was introduced (as a class) from 1937 onwards, originally being built for use on the Spirit of Progress. Over the years they have seen use on a variety of trains and have been renumbered numerous times.
The state passenger rail operator V/Line has five bs cars, varying from 50 to 65 years old. Each carriage contains eight compartments of economy four-facing-four seating, with an internal corridor down one side and a toilet at each end. The toilets can no longer be used as they discharge onto the tracks below. The bs cars are V/Line’s only compartment stock.
All bs cars were out of regular service by the middle of 2007 and were placed into storage. When in use, they could be found added onto the end of existing carriage sets to increase service capacity.
